Transitioning to a New Version of ComTrack
When users move to a new version of ComTrack, they will select the new version, but all their data will initially be blank. To transfer their data, users typically copy and paste from their current version.
However, this approach can be cumbersome, especially with large datasets:
- Clipboard Overload: Large amounts of data can cause issues during copy-pasting.
- Pasting Errors: If users don’t select Paste Values Only, the data can become misaligned or corrupted.
A Better Solution: Backups and Imports
To simplify the process and reduce clicks and user effort (a core principle of ours), we’ve introduced Backup and Import Backup features.
- Creating a Backup:
- Users click the Backup button to export data from these tabs:
- Settings
- All Time
- Agent List
- Reference
- The exported file is a plain .xlsx (no macros, no buttons) with only the ComTrack logo in the top left—no branded logo underneath.
- The default filename:
ComTrack Backup [date] [time].xlsx
- Users click the Backup button to export data from these tabs:
- Importing the Backup into the New Version:
- After opening the new version, users click Import Backup.
- ComTrack prompts users to select the .xlsx backup file. Only valid files will be clickable.
- Once selected, the data for Settings, All Time, Agent List, and Reference tabs is imported seamlessly.
Voilà! Users now have the new version of ComTrack with all their original data intact. While payroll might not need to be re-run, users will need to split months again—but that’s a manageable step.
